For a long time I have been looking for no frills, low cost entry level student instruments that we could sell as an alternative to rental instruments. I have evaluated many different low cost instruments from all over the world and have found the vast majority of them to be totally unsuitable because of poor construction or fit, heavy or poor valve action or poor note centering and playability. I have found that the valve assembly on the Iolite, Monique and Mirage model trumpets have a fair quality, on the Iolite to better quality nickel plated valve action on the Monique to an excellent quality valve on the Maestro trumpets, good fit of all the tuning slides including a 3rd valve expression slide, a very good quality 7C mouthpiece, good lacquer finish on the Iolite to a very good lacquer finish on the Monique and Mirage, especially the Silver Plated models, good quality hard case on the Iolite to very good quality on the Monique lines. Most important of all very good ease of blowing performance and tone.
The Iolite and Monique instruments are made in China in different state run factories which have been making good student instruments for over 40 years. The factories are also ISO 9002 Compliant. The Mirage trumpets are Made in Taiwan.

Trumpets with Standard Nickel Plated or Monel Valves
No matter what the brand name or the cost, the vast majority of student trumpets offered have very loose tolerance nickel plated valve assemblies with a great deal of clearance around the valves to allow them to work under the poor maintenance conditions that many beginning students tend to give their instruments. The primary disadvantage with a student instrument with loose tolerance nickel plated valves is that they can never play as well as a high quality instrument with close tolerance precision Stainless Steel valves that the Amati trumpets are equipped with. Student trumpets with loose tolerance nickel plated valves will also require copious amounts of oil in order to get the valves to seal properly so that the instrument can be played. When excess oil, more than one or two drops, is applied to the Amati valves it will tend to slow the valve action down due to hydraulic action as is the case with all of the intermediate and professional grades of trumpets with precision close tolerance valves. In addition instruments with close tolerance valves, such as the Amati, are also some what more sensitive to food debris and sugar from soft drinks blown into it by students who haven't learned to rinse their mouth out with water prior to playing their instrument. Since the Amati instruments as with all very high quality professional instruments require a little more care in maintenance than a standard student trumpet. We recommend the Amati line of trumpets for students who have some experience in taking care of their instrument.

The STR211 instruments are almost identical to the Amati ATR213 trumpets, as shown above, with the exception that the STR211 has only 1 water key, no main tuning slide brace and a slightly smaller hard case. These trumpets offer all of the same fine playing attributes of the Amati ATR213 series and make an excellent starter trumpet for the beginning student.
